After installing Echofon an icon will appear in the bottom right corner of your browser windows, in the status bar. It will be gray initially, click it to enter the open the setup window.
When someone you follow posts a tweet, Echofon will show a small baloon in the bottom right corner of your browser. If you click the user's avatar, that user's profile page will be opened in a new tab.
You can also mark the tweet as a favorite, or reply to the tweet using the buttons on the right side of the balloon.
Click the Echofon icon in the status bar to open a window containing the most recent tweets from those you follow. You can also author a tweet from this screen, just type in the field at the bottom. If you would like to post a link to the page you are currently viewing, press the link button to the left of the text entry field.
When you click TwitterFox icon on the status bar, you can see a TwitterFox window on right-bottom corner of the browser. It has the last 40 messages and an input text box. If you want to update your message, enter your message in the text box. You can insert an URL of current tab with an insert URL icon.
The window closes when you click on an avatar, a link or the Echofon logo. If you would like to change this behavior, there is an option for it in the preferences window.
Right click on each tweet to open a context menu. This menu has "Copy", "Retweet", "Open this tweet in new tab" and "Delete this tweet".
If you want to see where a shortened URL goes, before clicking it, hover you mouse over it for a moment. Echofon will decode URLs shortened by tinyurl.com, is.gd, and bit.ly. Echofon automatically shortens your URLs using tinyurl.com automatically.
You can use more than one account with Echofon, right-click the Echofon icon to access the preferences window where you can add accounts. Right click the icon again to choose the account you want to use.
Echofon doesn't overwrite your Twitter browser cookies, this means you can use one account in Echofon, and another on the Twitter website.
Echofon for Firefox syncs unread tweets with your iPhone when you use Echofon for iPhone.
For Firebug users
Several extensions, for example Firebug, have assigned Ctrl+Shift+P and Ctrl+Shift+L for their functions. If you can't use default keyboard shortcut, you have to re-assign shortcut key on preferences window.
You can set your favorite sound for a notification of updates. You can use a WAV file or an AIFF file (Mac only). Echofon doesn't contain any sound files, you'll need to provide your own.
